Over the past couple of decades, China has become the world’s leading supplier of inexpensive tech gadgets, but also of many other products we use in everyday life. However, we’ve been hearing a lot lately of toxic, fake and cheap products manufactured in China and sold throughout America online on sites like eBay, AliExpress, Amazon.com, etc. Other products are shipped directly from the country.
The thing is the huge demand of products generally puts a lot of pressure on production, which often results in low quality standards. It’s because of this that many countries worldwide have stopped importing Chinese goods.
Below you’ll find 10 Chinese products that are known to be highly toxic because of the harmful ingredients used for their production. These products should be avoided at all costs:
#1 BABY FORMULA
In 2004 dangerous instant baby formula caused the death of many children in the Fu yang province, China, and 50 people have been held responsible for this, reports CBS News. The thing is this instant baby formula only had a few nutrients. It mainly contained chalk, which made the children develop a condition called a “big head disease”. This condition made the babies’ heads swell while the rest of their bodies slowly deteriorated.
#2 CHINESE APPLE JUICE
As unbelievable as it may sound, almost 50% of the apple juice sold across America was imported from China. China is by far the largest pesticide producing country in the world. Sadly, the country still hasn’t passed regulation to address pesticide or chemical residue on foods. Avoiding apple juice is highly recommended for both children and adults.
#3 BEEF MADE OF PORK
Due to the lower prices of pork in China, some Chinese restaurants have been selling pork as beef. But, this isn’t the worst part. Before being sold, pork is usually chemically treated. Namely, beef extract and some glazing agent are used to treat the pork for an hour and a half. According to medical experts, this fake “beef” should be avoided at all costs because it may cause slow poisoning, deformity, and it can even cancer in the long run.
#4 TILAPIA
Tilapia sold in America is mostly farm-raised in China. There’s mounting evidence confirming that this fish is loaded with toxic chemicals due to the poor farming practices (usually small pools of unclean water that the fish live in). Unfortunately, 80% of the tilapia in America comes from China.
#5 MUD SOLD AS BLACK PEPPER
Disturbing news recently spread across the country after local media from Guangdong Province in China reported that a market seller sold mud as black pepper. Also, the white pepper he sold was mostly made of flour. The most outrageous thing in the whole incident was his excuse that he sold this fake pepper so that it wouldn’t kill people.
#6 CHICKEN
The US Department of Agriculture approved the sale of Chinese chicken in America in 2013. According to food safety experts, the quality of this chicken is questionable as China is a country where avian flu and food-borne illness are common. In addition, China produces more pesticides than any other country in the world and is one of the most polluted countries because of its mass production and industry.
#7 GREEN PEAS
According to 2005 reports published in a local daily newspaper, fake peas were found in Hunan region, China. Namely, these peas remained firm even after boiling, and they turned the water unnatural green. One of the manufacturers of this harmful food item was soon disclosed and shut down after producing this dangerous product for three years.
It was discovered that these fake peas were actually made of soybeans and snow peas and sodium metabisulfite and green color were used to give the peas green color. Just for the record, this color has been banned because it compromises many body functions including its ability to absorb calcium. It has also been linked to cancer.
As stated by Sang Liwei, a Beijing-based nutritionist, these toxic and fake green peas had been found in Guangdong and Hunan even before; however, the news didn’t attract much attention from the authorities. The thing is, Chinese officials only ban or label a food item as dangerous when at least one person dies from it. It’s no wonder why such cases, which only imply possible long-term health risks, are not regarded or handled accordingly.
#8 IMITATION EGGS
As unbelievable as it sounds, there have been instructional videos on several Chinese websites on how to produce and sell fake eggs in order to profit. In fact, these eggs comprise some very dangerous chemicals including Alginic Acid, Potassium Alum, Gelatin, Calcium Chloride, water and artificial color. The eggshells are made from Calcium Carbonate. The worst thing is that eating these eggs can lead to some serious health issues such as memory-loss and dementia.
#9 FAKE SWEET POTATO NOODLES
China made at least 5.5 tons of fake noodles, according to Chinese authorities who found a facility in Zhongshan city that produced fake sweet potato noodles. This followed numerous complains that sweet potato noodles had a strange taste. After Chinese official carried out an investigation into the matter, it was discovered that the noodles were made of corn and paraffin wax with an industrial ink used for the purple color. No wonder, this was disturbing news for all the consumers of “sweet potato noodles.”
#10 CHINESE GARLIC
Tainted garlic produced in China has also been found on the American market. Garlic from China is sprayed with chemicals; this garlic leaves a bad aftertaste similar to a chemical concoction. Research found that 31% of garlic sold in the US is from China.
